This website is a memorial to our stepfather, Henry Firmin Winters, known to all as "Hal".
Hal was 21 years old when war was declared on 5th
August 1914. He enlisted on 18th August, number 240 in Victoria's 2nd Field Ambulance.
site will present Hal's personal diary of the war years, starting with
his embarkation on the troopship "Wiltshire" on 18th October 1914 and
ending with his disembarkation from the "Port Hacking" on 29th January
We propose to progressively build the site with facsimile images of the
original diaries, together with readable transcriptions. These will be
published week-by-week on the centenary of the original entries.
Hal died in 1965 aged 71 years. Our mother, widowed in 1932, had married Hal in 1940.
With good wishes to all who look.
From the surviving step-children;
Margaret Boston (research & blogger), Keith Head (web editor) and Sybil Kent (cartogapher).
